چکیده

Helminth parasites of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were surveyed in Bayou Traverse, a waterway in the LaBranche wetlands of southeastern Louisiana, U.S.A. In total, 1,255 parasites belonging to 8 species were collected and identified, including Ascocotyle ampullacea, Ascocotyle mcintoshi, Ascocotyle tenuicollis, Phagicola diminuta, Phagicola sp., Echinochasmus swartzi, Posthodiplostomum minimum, and Glossocercus sp. Adult parasites were obtained by infecting mice (Mus musculus), ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), and chicks (Gallus domesticus) with metacercariae from G. affinis. Bayou Traverse is characterized by snails and fish typical of brackish water habitats and is home to a rich piscivorous bird and mammal fauna. The parasites found in this study are consistent with helminths that parasitize birds and mammals as adults. This study is a survey of the trematodes and cestodes from an estuarine habitat.

Reproductive characteristics of male mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) inhabiting a small southeastern U.S. river receiving treated domestic sewage effluent.

A population of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) living below a wastewater treatment plant in the vicinity of Birmingham (AL, USA) was studied for evidence of exposure to estrogens. Mosquitofish are sexually dimorphic live-bearing fish. Males have an elongated and modified anal fin, called a gonopodium, used in mating. It has been hypothesized that exposure to estrogens and/or anti-andro...

Viability Costs of Reproduction and Behavioral Compensation in Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis)

The cost of reproduction hypothesis suggests that current reproduction has inherent tradeoffs with future reproduction. These tradeoffs can be both in the form of energy allocated to current offspring as opposed to somatic maintenance and future reproduction (allocation costs), or as an increase in mortality as a result of morphological or physiological changes related to reproduction (viabilit...

Dietary composition of Gambusia affinis (Family Poeciliidae) populations in the northern Waikato region of New Zealand

Invertebrates were collected and identified from the stomach contents of eight mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) populations in the northern Waikato region of New Zealand at 3-month intervals from December 1994 to September 1995. To investigate temporal and spatial patterns in dietary composition a novel analysis programme was created that used Gower's similarity coefficient. The analysis found d...

Use of microsatellite paternity analysis to determine male mating success in the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis

I tested the effects of male body size on male mating behavior and reproductive success in the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. In two separate behavioral experiments (male–male competition and no-competition), I tested the predictions that (1) larger males out-compete smaller males for mates and (2) small males increase their number of mating attempts in the absence of a larger competit...
